Choosing the right battery energy storage (BESS) manufacturer is one of the most important decisions an EPC, developer or distributor will make. The wrong supplier means safety risks, warranty headaches and projects that underperform for years. This 2026 checklist gives you the exact questions to ask — and the red flags to avoid — before you sign a supply contract.

1. Is it a real manufacturer or a trading company?

This is the first filter. A genuine manufacturer owns the factory, controls quality, and stands behind the warranty; a trading company simply resells and adds a markup. Ask for the factory address, production capacity, and a video or visit. Buying factory-direct usually means better pricing, faster technical answers and clearer accountability when something needs fixing.

2. What is their production capacity and track record?

Capacity signals stability and lead-time reliability. Ask for annual output (for example, 15 GWh), how long they have produced storage systems, and reference projects with real deployed capacity. A supplier that can point to an operating installation — such as a 15 MW / 30 MWh station running on-site — is far safer than one with only brochures.

3. Which certifications do they actually hold?

Certifications protect your project, your financing and your reputation. Ask for current documents, not claims. A credible BESS manufacturer should be able to show:

  • UN 38.3 – lithium battery transport safety
  • IEC – international product standards
  • GB/T 36276 – energy storage battery standard
  • ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 – quality, environmental and safety management
  • IATF 16949 – automotive-grade quality management

If a supplier is vague about certifications or cannot produce the certificates, treat it as a serious red flag.

4. What battery chemistry and cells do they use?

For most commercial, industrial and utility projects, LFP (lithium iron phosphate) is the standard thanks to its long cycle life and strong thermal safety. Ask who makes the cells, the rated cycle life, and the warranty on capacity retention. Cell quality is the single biggest driver of long-term performance.

5. How good is the thermal and safety design?

Ask how the system manages heat and prevents thermal runaway. Liquid-cooled systems hold cells in their optimal range and extend life, especially in hot climates, and a proper enclosure rating (such as IP55) protects against dust and weather. Confirm the battery management system (BMS), fire detection and protection approach.

6. What warranty and after-sales support do they offer?

A strong warranty is meaningless if the company cannot support it. Check the warranty length and terms, spare-parts availability, remote monitoring, and how fast they respond to technical issues. Ask specifically how they handle claims for buyers in your region.

7. Can they handle export logistics to your market?

Confirm export experience, packaging for lithium batteries, documentation, and delivery to your nearest port. A manufacturer that regularly ships to your region will make customs and delivery far smoother.
